What Golf Can Learn From 5-a-Side Football
This week, the world’s best are grinding it out in the U.S. Open—arguably the toughest major on the calendar. It’s brutal. It’s brilliant. And if you’re anything like me, it stirs that little competitive voice in your head:
“What would I score out there?!”
During summer, that itch is easy to scratch. Club comps, matchplay knockouts, Inter-Club matches, whether you're a 5 handicap or a 15, there’s always something to aim for.
But once the clocks go back? good night to twilight golf. Clubs get packed away, the course turns to mush, and competitive golf hibernates until spring.
So what do we do instead?
For a lot of us, it used to be five-a-side Football.
Five-a-Side Football Had It Right
Remember it? One hour under the floodlights. Banter flying. Someone over-committing to a tackle. Someone else clinging to the boards gasping for breath. A pint after, win or lose.
It wasn’t about being good. It was about turning up, moving your body, and competing midweek.
But then the hamstrings gave out. The knees creaked. You missed one game… then another. And suddenly, the routine was gone.
And here’s the thing:
Golf can give you that same buzz—but better.
Because golf is a game for life. The handicap system levels the field. You don’t need to be scratch. You just need to want it. And now—with simulator technology what it is—we can play proper, structured golf... all year round.
So Here’s the Big Idea
What if we took everything that works about five-a-side—
✅ weekly games
✅ structured leagues
✅ banter, rivalry, routine
…and built it into golf?
That’s exactly what we’re doing with Immersive Golf.
We’re launching a winter league—starting in Sheffield this October—that puts competitive golf back on the calendar when most of us have packed it in.
✅ Weekly matches
✅ Local teams
✅ Real rivalries
✅ Indoor simulator venues (no mud, no frost delays, just golf)
This isn’t about casual swings and beers in a bay. It’s about bringing structure, competition, and community to winter golf—and giving us all a reason to stay sharp when the pros are chasing majors.
Want In?
We’re building the community now—starting in Sheffield, but aiming much bigger. If you:
Play competitive golf in the summer but hate the winter gap
Miss the match night buzz
Want something to look forward to when it’s cold, dark, and pouring outside
Then we want to hear from you.
⛳ Register your interest here - and be part of the first wave.
Even if you’re not based in Sheffield—get in touch. We’re looking to grow across England and want to know where demand is building.
And while you’re watching the U.S. Open this weekend, ask yourself:
Why should the pros have all the fun this winter?
